A coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee to experience Sydney at its natural best

Sydney Harbour Whale Watching Cruises

Sydney is synonymous with the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, but these man-made attractions cannot be compared to the spectacular natural coastal beauty this harbour city has been endowed with.

There’s nothing like an invigorating coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee to experience Sydney at its natural best! This magical trail traverses six beaches, parks, rockpools and majestic cliffs that absolutely take your breath away. Be it summer or winter, this meandering walk along the Sydney coast will refresh and energize you with its picturesque paths and stunning views.

This 6 km trail begins at the iconic Bondi Icebergs, just above the Bondi Baths. It takes about 2 hours if you walk at a leisurely pace taking in the brilliant ocean views and making pit stops for refreshments.

Wear a hat with a wide visor, comfortable shoes, keep your camera handy and you’re good to go. What’s not to love about a refreshing workout overlooking the vast expanse of the ocean? But, if you do get tired along the way, you’re free to relax at the next beach you chance upon and take the bus back when you feel like it!

At the start of the walk, you make your way up to Marks Park, one of the highest points along the walk, and what catches your eye are the exquisite Aboriginal rock carvings. This is also a prime whale-watching spot that treats you to the migration of the humpback whales as they make their way up north between May and November.

En route to Tamarama, you’ll pass by the quaint little Mackenzie’s Point Beach, which is more a surfer’s beach than a swimmer’s beach. As you continue on the coastal trail, you will reach the famed Bronte Beach. The stairs near the rock pool take you to the clifftop promenade that boasts the best views of Tamarama, Bronte, Bondi and Malabar Headland.

From Bronte, the trail will lead you to historic the Waverley Cemetery perched atop the magnificent sandstone cliffs and rock platforms – one of the most scenic cemeteries in the world. As you make your way down the cliff path, you’ll find Clovelly Beach nestled between Bronte and Gordons Bay, a great place to go swimming or snorkelling. The climb to Gordon’s Bay is quite challenging, but if you brave the odds and make it to the top, you’ll be rewarded with the most brilliant clifftop views!

Nothing is quite as beautiful as the last leg of the scenic trail from Clovelly to Coogee where you can cool off at one of the shaded parks or take a dip in Wylie’s Baths or relax at the Coogee Beach!

As you head back to your home or hotel, you’re sure to be consumed by brilliant sights that you saw, replaying them in your head with vivid clarity. For any tourist or Sydneysider, it’s definitely worth taking the time out to indulge in this experience!
